In a recent team meeting, we looked at Scouller’s three levels of leadership model, which looks at Public, private, and personal leadership. I believe this model can be beneficial in the quest for developing our leadership capabilities.

 

Leadership is not limited to a single aspect; it manifests itself in various contexts, each with its unique challenges and dynamics. To better understand the many different aspects of leadership, experts have developed models that delve into different levels of leadership. One such model is Scouller's Three Levels of Leadership, which explores the dynamics of public, private, and personal leadership.

 

Level 1: Public Leadership:

 

According to Scouller, Public leadership refers to leadership in the context of organisations or institutions that operate for the public good, such as governments, non-profit organisations, and community groups. Leaders in this domain have a responsibility to serve and make decisions that benefit a broader group of people. Public leaders must navigate complex political landscapes, address societal challenges, and uphold public trust. They need to possess strong communication skills, strategic thinking, and a keen understanding of the needs and aspirations of the communities they serve. Public leadership demands a focus on the common good and to drive positive change on a larger scale.

 

Level 2: Private Leadership:

 

Scouller teaches that Private leadership encompasses leadership within the realms of corporations, businesses, and other private entities. Leaders in this domain are responsible for guiding their organisations towards achieving strategic objectives, profitability, and sustainable growth. Private leaders must possess business acumen, vision, and the ability to adapt to dynamic market conditions. They must inspire and motivate their teams, foster innovation, and cultivate a positive organisational culture. In his book, Scouller describes that private leadership involves balancing the needs of stakeholders, driving financial success, and nurturing an environment that empowers employees to excel. Effective private leaders embrace challenges, take calculated risks, and strive for excellence in a competitive marketplace.

 

Level 3: Personal Leadership:

 

At the core of Scouller's model lies personal leadership, which focuses on leading oneself and one's own life. By practising personal leadership, individuals become empowered to lead fulfilling lives, find purpose, and positively influence those around them.
